Facebook Places cannot be unmerged

Before getting any further you should know that once you Merge your Business Page with a Facebook Place, it cannot be UnMerged (unless Facebook changes it).

We have been seeing a lot of talk surrounding Facebook Places. It was a new product that Facebook rolled out a couple of months ago. In the world of location based apps, if any company has the power to make this mainstream Facebook does.

The Pros:

Facebook Places provides many great tools to the business community.

- Check In: when your followers visit your location they can share with the world where they’ve been. AKA – free promotion for your business

- Facebook Deals (aka free Customer Loyalty Program): Basically you can reward your followers who check in with coupons or free products. Very cool

The Cons:

- Looks Different: The Page looks completely different and the Like Button is hard to find. Because it is not mainstream enough people might be confused

- Can’t Post: Followers cannot post to the wall unless the check in (discourages conversation). They can however leave a comment on your status post.

- Default Landing Tab: Custom Tabs still exist, but they CANNOT be a Default Landing Tab for Non-Followers – very bad in our opinion

- Left Navigation: Navigation is on the left side, when most people have come to understand that the TAB navigation is near the top

- Icons: Custom Tabs have their weird <> icon which makes me think that people will not click it.

Our recommendation

  • Right now Facebook is REALLY encouraging people to merge their business page to a Facebook Place. Would we recommend this – definitely not until they make some changes.
  • Is a Facebook Place beneficial to your business – yes – especially if you’re a restaurant or a retail (type) location.

Check out a recent article posted by All Facebook and a Facebook Page requesting Facebook to allowing Unmerging.

  • We recommend you to have both a Facebook Page and a Facebook Page. This allows you to have the best of both worlds until Facebook makes changes.
