With the growth of established social networks like Facebook and Twitter, and new ones such as Pinterest and Google+ appearing weekly, it seems, keeping yourself and your family safe while using social media is more important than ever. Social Media, and the internet, is much like the saying about Las Vegas. What happens here, stays here. Social media has made it easier for a stalker to know more about his potential victim than ever thought possible. But you don’t have to be a victim. Here are 5 tips that can help you be safe, yet still have fun using social media.

     1. There’s no such thing as truly private

Whatever you post, update, tweet, or share has the potential to be grabbed, copied, scanned, or otherwise taken and saved by someone else and then posted on another site without your knowledge. Status updates, tweets, and other social media posts are also subject to subpoena by law enforcement agencies. So, be careful what you say in your posts.

     2. Big Brother is still watching you

Did you know that the Library of Congress has archives of every public Tweet? Until recently, we didn’t know that either. But it’s true. In 2010, Twitter donated its digital archive of public tweets to the Library of Congress. This archive covers from the very beginning of Twitter in 2006 to the present. We’ll say it again. Be careful with what you say in your tweets.

     3. Hide Your Age

Emily Post would have said that it is not polite to ask someone their age. Well, in the socially networked world we currently live in, it’s not smart to tell the world your age, either. If you feel like you have to let everyone know your birthday, that’s fine. Just don’t share your year. Doing this makes you much more vulnerable to identity theft.

  4. Keep Work and Family Separate

If you have a high-profile job, or one which requires interaction with less-than-honorable persons, this one is a biggie. One suggestion is to have separate accounts for your personal and professional lives. If you have a Facebook profile, create a fanpage for your professional business/name. Create a separate Twitter account for your business/work. If someone posts about your family or personal life on your professional page/account, delete them, and then explain to the poster how you don’t feel that it’s appropriate.

    5. Default ≠ Safe

Don’t make the assumption that just because a site has certain default settings that they are the safest settings for you. Take time to go through the settings on the social media sites you frequent. Don’t have your updates set to “public”. Sometimes, even “friends of friends” can be a little too public for some people. Customize your privacy settings to what you are comfortable with.

Hopefully, you’ll find these tips helpful in making your online presence more secure. If you need help managing your online presence through social media, we are experts! Contact us today to setup a social media consultation.

Do you want to increase fan engagement on your business’s fanpage? Are you taking full advantage of the different ways to post status updates on Facebook? Facebook offers multiple ways to engage with your fans and followers. When you update your status, you’ll see the following options:

Most users are familiar with a few of the options here. We’ll give a brief overview on each one.

Status - This is the one that most everyone is familiar with. Just type what you want to say in the box and click “Post”. If you are struggling with ideas for your status updates, check out our new app, Postabulous. It can help you create status updates that will generate comments on your page.

Photo - Status updates that contain photos generate more traffic and comments than any other type of update, and it’s not even close. If you’re at an event, take a photo and post it to your page. If someone interesting visits your location, ask them if you can take their picture and put it on your fanpage. People are much more likely to comment on a photo versus an update that is text only.

Link - If you want to drive people to your website or blog, or you just see something interesting on the internet and want to share it, use the Link option. Also, when you post this, ask your followers to Like the link as well.

Video - If you have a video you want to highlight, use the status update to show it to your fans. Also, ask your fans to Like the video. Getting your fans to Like a video or link increases your visibility and gets it in front of a bigger audience.

Question - This feature is a very good method of getting interaction from your fans and followers. You are limited only by your imagination. Ask your question and provide possible answers for fans to choose from. However, you do want to make sure that you don’t allow anyone to add answers, otherwise you could suffer some embarrassment as one company did recently.

If you or your business or organization is looking to expand it’s presence on different social media platforms, contact us and we’ll be glad to discuss different options and plans which would be beneficial to your business.

As a business, when you post a status update on your Facebook fanpage, whether you realize it or not, you’re really doing two different things. First, you may be trying to inform your fans or followers about an item, a promotion, or an update on your business. But you already knew that.

What you may not know is that you’re also trying to stimulate and build engagement among your followers. The best way to do that is to make your posts and status updates less about your business. We’re not saying to never promote your business or your product. But we have found that fans and followers tend to engage more with business pages on posts that have nothing to do with the company or the product. Here are a few ideas for status updates that can accomplish this.

What’s the most fun activity that doesn’t cost anything?

Are you more likely to be awake at 6am or 2am?

What gadget from long ago rocked your world when it first came out?

The one thing I can’t live without is ________.

All of these statuses invite engagement from your followers. Facebook is about sharing and having fun. And these are fun little questions that get people thinking. People are more likely to respond to an update like this versus one that simply makes a statement. Take a look at your unlikes. This can help you determine if you’re posting things that don’t really matter to your fans.

Our new app, Postabulous, can help you stimulate fan engagement on your page. It has over 4,000 pre-written status updates in 15 categories from questions to fill-in-the-blank to seasonal updates. If you struggle with coming up with compelling status updates that trigger fan engagement, Postabulous is just for you. The first 250 people who signup get FREE Beta Access through January 13, 2012.

As it relates to status updates on Facebook, did you know that WHEN you post matters just as much, if not more, as WHAT you post? If you post a great photo or intriguing question, but no one sees it, then what’s the point?

According to a study conducted earlier this year by Buddy Media, office hours (8am to 4pm) may be the worst time for sending out content. The study showed that people are most active on Facebook in the early morning (7AM), after work (5PM), and late-night (11PM). The study also shows that engagement tends to be higher on Thursdays and Fridays, with Mondays being the worst day of the week. Saturdays and Sundays are also good days for getting engagement from your updates, as more users are likely to be online on the weekends.

Our newest app, Postabulous, allows you to schedule posts and updates for any future date and time. If you manage multiple fanpages, you can schedule updates to go to more than one page at the same time. Sign up now and you will get free Beta access to the app through January 13, 2012. For more information, check out the Postabulous website.

When someone visits your website, your blog, or your Facebook fanpage, they likely get there in a variety of ways. They may have found your site via a search engine, an ad on Facebook, a link sent via email, or just by old-fashioned word of mouth. It’s also likely that once they arrive at your site, they’ll check out your other sites/pages online. Because of that, it’s very important to have a uniform look across all of your sites.

The last thing you want to do is confuse a potential new customer. And that’s just what not having a consistent online look does. For example, when someone goes from your Facebook fanpage to your website, they expect to see certain things that reinforce your brand, like your logo, for one.

Here are a couple of examples of sites that have good synergy from one platform to another.

The River Church – Facebook

The River Church – Website

The Suburban Outlaws – Facebook

The Suburban Outlaws – Website

As you can see with these two examples, when you go from one page to the other, there’s no question that you’re on the right page or site. The logos are placed in a prominent position. The graphic design of the pages are very similar. There is complete synergy between the pages. There’s no doubt that they’re connected. And there’s no chance of confusing the viewer.

140ology can help bring you synergy and connect all of your online presences with one consistent look. Contact us today and let us help you and your business express yourself socially.

Lots of people ask the question, WHY CAN’T I CHANGE MY FAN PAGE NAME?

There are lots of reasons why you might need to make a name change to your fanpage. However the simple answer is …

Facebook does not allow you to change your page name once you reach 100 LIKES (or fans).

You should be happy that you can at least do that now, because until recently you were not able to change the page name after a page was created.

However, you should try to understand the reason that Facebook has this rule. Everyone is complaining about privacy and protection on Facebook and this is ultimately the reason they have this rule, to protect its community.

Imagine this scenario…. You LIKE a FanPage that was created for your city. Everyone thinks its a fun community page and then all along the person behind the page is the person running for mayor. They decide to change the page name to “Elect Joe Smith Mayor in 2014″? You would be rather annoyed, especially if you don’t agree with the new pages views. This would provide distrust to the overall Facebook network and is one of the main reasons that MySpace failed.

We understand your pain because there are many legitimate reasons to make a change. Our own company had a name change after being in business for 12 years and even with all of our connections to Facebook, we could not do anything to change it.

With the boom in social media sites in the last few years, you probably know that more and more employers are checking out their employees and potential new hires on sites like Facebook and Twitter. They want to gather as much information on you as they can.

Now, according to a new article by Mashable, this practice is now being expanded to include financial institutions. More and more banks are gathering data on their customers via social media. The thought is that this data will help them not only tailor their marketing efforts directly to their customers, but it will also help determine the customer’s potential credit risk. According to Mashable, it could be up to 5 years before banks begin acting on the data they receive.

Here’s what Mashable says financial institutions will be looking for.

Anything that indicates your financial situation or circumstances. This may include keywords such as fired, layoff, broke, or moving in with parents.

What your friends and followers are doing, financially. The thought process here is that you and your friends may have the same financial habits.

Upcoming life changes. Obviously, banks want to know if you are considering getting a bigger place to live, buying a new car, or having a baby. Banks could definitely tailor marketing specific products (car loan or mortgage) to you if they knew you were in one of these situations.

Don’t worry, though. Mashable does offer some tips that can help you.

Know your privacy settings. Sites like Facebook and Twitter have settings that allow you to only share what you want to share to who you want to share it. So, don’t publicly post a public status update about not having any money – unless you truly want the world to know about it.

Think before you post. This one seems to be a no-brainer. However, when you are upset or emotional, sometimes you forget about this one. Take a moment and make sure before you click “Publish”.

Everything can be traced back to you. The Internet has made this so easy, you almost forget about it sometimes. Everything from status updates to photo uploads to supposedly “anonymous” comments on a blog will eventually come back to you.

The thing to remember is that whatever you put out there on the Internet, it’s not private, so don’t expect it to be. More and more companies are using social media sites to check on employees or potential customers. Take the necessary steps to protect yourself.
